DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINES
FOR CIVIL, MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL
ENGINEERS

Design and construction of transmission lines needs all kinds of engineering expertise. The object of this course module is to acquaint engineers of all specialties with this inter-disciplinary activity, and provide a forum for discussion and exchange of knowledge and experience among the participants with diverse backgrounds.

CIVIL ENGINEERING ASPECTS: soil properties and behavior, foundation design; such as soil properties and foundation design.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ASPECTS: towers, crossarms, loads and forces on conductors, sag and tension calculation, span calculations, effect of temperature.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING ASPECTS: choice of voltage, line configuration, conductor spacing, conductor size, current capacity, line parameters such as resistance, inductance and capacitance and their roles.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING ASPECTS: route selection, perceived adverse effect on natural scenery, perceived harmful electromagnetic effects.
